The Moscow Triumphal Gate ( Russian Моско́вские Триумфа́льные воро́та) is a classicist triumphal gate in Saint Petersburg .

history

The Moscow Triumphal Gate was built in memory of the victories of the Russian army against Persia (1826–1828), Turkey (1828/9) and the suppression of the November Uprising in Poland (1830/1) in the years 1834–1838 during the rule of Tsar Nicholas I (ruled 1825–1855) was established. Originally it was supposed to be built on the Obvodny Canal . Due to the strong growth of the city, the future location was moved to the south along the approximately 10 km long Moskovsky Prospect . Originally the street led through the gate and there were guard houses on both sides, so that it also had the function of a city gate. Today the gate is on a traffic island and traffic is guided around it.

Under Stalin , the gate was dismantled in 1936 to be rebuilt on Moscow Square in front of the House of Soviets . The siege of Leningrad by the Wehrmacht prevented the implementation. Instead, the column drums were used as barriers against German tanks. The gate was rebuilt at its original location by 1960 - albeit without the guard houses on the side.

current condition

architecture

The approx. 20 m high and approx. 40 m wide structure was designed by the well-known Petersburg architect Vasily Stassow , who also designed the Narva Triumphal Arch , which was built around the same time . The main building material is sandstone ; load-bearing parts of the building such as the architrave are stabilized inside with cast iron girders. Each of the twelve fluted Doric columns consists of nine individual drums. As with the ancient Propylaea in Athens or the Brandenburg Gate (1791), the middle of the five gateways is somewhat wider.

decor

The figurative-decorative design of the triumphal gate goes back to the sculptor Boris Orlowski: On both sides of the attic inscription there are eight mighty, baroque trophy draperies with lances, armor, helmets, shields and banners - contemporary weapons such as rifles and cannons are missing. The upper part of the architrave is adorned with a total of 30 winged genii bearing coats of arms; under their feet are the guttae , which have already appeared in ancient temples .
