The Moto Guzzi GT is a motorcycle that Moto Guzzi manufactured from 1928 to 1934. "GT" stands for Gran Turismo .

history

In 1928 Carlo Guzzi and his brother Giuseppe constructed the GT based on the Sport 14 , their first motorcycle with rear suspension and one of the first with a cantilever swing arm . However, most customers had doubts about the torsional stiffness and thus the driving stability of this new motorcycle. Therefore, this model was only sold in a few copies. In order to prove the reliability, Giuseppe Guzzi undertook a long-distance journey with one of the machines to the North Cape in 28 days in 1928 . This gave the GT the nickname "Norge" (English: Norway ).

In 1931 the GT was revised in accordance with the new Sport 15 and added to the catalog as the GT 16 . In the meantime, the sufficiently good driving characteristics had been proven through racing and the new model sold significantly better than its predecessor.

In 1934, the overhead steering GTV replaced the GT 16 with its counter-steering engine.

Only 78 copies of the GT were sold in 1928–1930, while the GT 16 was built 754 times between 1931–1934.

technology

Engine and drive

The GT has an air-cooled single cylinder - four-stroke engine with horizontal cylinder. On the left stump of the dual-bearing crankshaft sits a smooth flywheel that runs outside the housing. A spur gear attached behind it drives the basket of the multi-plate oil bath clutch mounted on the transmission input shaft. The three-speed gearbox is operated with a gear lever on the right side of the tank. The transmission is connected to the rear wheel by a machine chain.

The hanging exhaust valve is controlled by the camshaft below via a bumper and a rocker arm , the vertical intake valve is controlled directly ( counter control ). To switch off the engine, the bumper is pushed forward using a valve lifter so that the exhaust valve opens. A spur gear on the right side of the engine drives the magneto . The ignition timing is adjusted manually.

The mixture is prepared by a flat-flow carburetor with a round slide, 36 mm passage and without an air filter. The chrome-plated exhaust pipe is pulled back on the left side of the machine and ends in a cigar-shaped silencer.

Frame and chassis

The GT has a double-loop pipe / sheet metal frame with a tail boom. The rear wheel is seated in a boom triangle rocker (Cantileverschwinge) whose upper front end is hinged to the frame. The lower front end is connected to two tie rods which, via a pressure plate attached to the front, apply pressure to two springs located under the engine when they are compressed. It has friction dampers supported on the tail boom. The front wheel sits in a parallelogram fork with a barrel spring .

Tanks

The GT's petrol tank, designed as a plug-in tank, has a volume of 11 liters, the oil tank underneath has a volume of 3 liters. The oil tank is connected to the cylinder head and the oil pump in the engine's dry sump by chrome-plated copper pipes. The GT 16 also has an 11 liter fuel tank, but in the shape of a saddle.

Wheels and brakes

The GT has 26 ″ wire-spoke wheels and half-hub drum brakes . The rear brake is operated via a foot lever on the left side of the engine and a linkage, the front with a cable from the handlebars. The foot brake lever can be operated with the heel. The GT 16 has the same equipment, but 19 ″ wheels.

Materials

The engine / gearbox housing is made of aluminum, the cylinder and cylinder head are made of gray cast iron . The frame, the rear swing arm, the front fork, the tank and the mudguards, on the other hand, are made of sheet steel.

Painting, surface treatment and emblems

The sheet steel parts of the GT are painted red. Tanks and mudguards have gold-colored lines. On the tank sides of the machines there are gold-colored Moto Guzzi emblems as decals. The gray cast iron parts of the engine are burnished. The GT 16 was available in two different shades of red, but also as a luxury model with chrome-plated and partially painted petrol and oil tanks.
