The Moto Guzzi V series is a series of motorcycles manufactured by the Italian company Moto Guzzi from 1934 to 1948.
history
At the end of 1933, the V and W models appeared as alternatives to the Sport 15 . Instead of counteracting engines, they had engines with V-shaped intake and exhaust valves in the cylinder head. While the V model developed 18.9 hp, the otherwise identical W model had a more powerful 22 hp engine.
In 1934, the rear- suspension counterparts GTV and GTW appeared , which replaced the counter-steered GT 16 model with rear suspension. In 1937, the GTC model, which was again uprated and also with rear suspension, came out with an engine that delivered 26 hp. This model was abandoned in 1939.
In 1940, as the war progressed, the production of civil motorcycles was stopped and only resumed in 1945. At the end of 1947 the GTV and GTW appeared with telescopic forks instead of the old parallelogram forks. The GTW was manufactured until 1948, the GTV until 1949. Then the new Astore replaced the latter.
technology
Engine and drive
The V series. has an air-cooled single - cylinder four-stroke engine with a horizontal cylinder. On the left stump of the double-bearing crankshaft there is a smooth flywheel that runs outside the housing. A spur gear attached behind it drives the basket of the multi-plate oil bath clutch mounted on the transmission input shaft. The helical four-speed gearbox can be operated with a shift lever on the right side of the tank. The transmission is connected to the rear wheel by a machine chain.
The two hanging valves are controlled by the camshaft below via bumpers and rocker arms . To switch off the engine, the bumpers are pushed forward using a valve lifter so that both valves open. The magneto is driven by a spur gear on the right side of the engine. The ignition timing is adjusted manually.
The mixture is prepared by a flat-flow carburetor with a round slide, in the case of the GTC with a 28.5 mm passage and without an air filter. The chrome-plated exhaust pipe is pulled back on the left side of the machine and ends in a cigar-shaped silencer. The GTC has an exhaust pipe that is drawn upwards and ends in two blackened silencers in the shape of a cigar, one above the other.
Frame and chassis
The V series has a double loop pipe / sheet metal frame. While the models V and W have a rigid rear suspension, the frames of the other models are equipped with a tail boom and a rear swing arm with cantilever suspension, the friction dampers of which are supported on the tail boom. On models up to 1947, the front wheel sits in a parallelogram fork with a barrel spring . In the later models, an upside-down fork is used instead .
Tanks
The fuel tank has a volume of 12 liters, the oil tank underneath has a volume of 2.5 liters. The oil tank is connected to the cylinder head and the oil pump in the engine's dry sump by chrome-plated copper pipes.
Wheels and brakes
The 19 ″ wheels (front wheel of the GTC: 20 ″) are wire-spoke wheels and have half-hub drum brakes . The rear brake is operated via a foot lever on the left side of the engine and a linkage, the front with a cable from the handlebars. The foot brake lever can be operated with the heel.
Materials
The engine / gearbox housing is made of aluminum, the cylinder and cylinder head are made of gray cast iron . The frame, the rear swing arm, the front fork, the tank and the mudguards, on the other hand, are made of sheet steel.
Painting, surface treatment and emblems
The sheet steel parts are painted in red. The ranks are chrome-plated and partially painted. Tanks and mudguards have gold-colored lines. On the tank sides of the machines there are gold-colored Moto Guzzi emblems as decals. The gray cast iron parts of the engine are burnished.
