Mougeotia is a species from the green algae group of the yoke algae (Zygnematales) that occursin freshwater. It consists of around 140 species.

features

The representatives form unbranched cell threads that feel slimy. The individual cells are elongated, cylindrical and have a smooth surface. The cell nucleus is suspended from a plasma bridge in the middle of the cell. In the middle of the cell is a plate-shaped chloroplast with pyrenoids .

The asexual reproduction is done sometimes by the formation of Parthenosporen. The sexual reproduction is done by the zygnematophyceae characteristic conjugation . The zygote germinates in spring.

Occurrence

The representatives of the genus occur in standing fresh water: in lakes, ponds, ponds, puddles and bog pools. They often occur together with the related genera Spirogyra and Zygnema .
