The Mount Barney is close to the border with New South Wales in the southeast of Queensland , about 130 km from Brisbane located in the McPherson Range . It is the fourth highest mountain in Queensland. The mountain formed by volcanic processes is one of the Focal Peaks and has two main peaks, the east and the higher west peaks.

geology

The 1,359 m high Mount Barney consists of granophyr , a granite-like rock that penetrated through an overlying 350 million year old sandstone and created a mountain with a height of 2,000 m. The Carboniferous sandstone eroded while the 23 million year old Granophyr resisted. During the formation process, the nearby mountains Mount May , Mount Maroon , Mount Lindesay and Mount Ernest emerged as glowing lava and solidified into rhyolite .

history

The Mount Barney has in the dreamtime of the local Aborigines great importance, since this is about a murder that is related to the mountain. Therefore, many of them are denied access to the mountain.

The first European to climb the eastern summit of the mountain in January 1828 was Patrick Logan , after whom Logans Ridge is named. The climb was too difficult for his expedition members Charles Frazer and Allan Cunningham . After this expedition, British colonists began to settle this mountainous area in the 1840s. According to reports, the first ascent of the mountain and hikes by those seeking relaxation began in the 1860s. The higher and more difficult to climb west summit was climbed from the early 1930s.

In 1947 the area around Mount Barney was placed under nature protection and in 1984 part of the Gondwana rainforests of Australia as Mount Barney National Park .

There are also hiking trails and camping opportunities for tourists around Mount Barney .
