The Mount Challenger (8,207 ft (2,501 m)) is a mountain in North Cascades National Park in the US state of Washington . Because of its isolated location, it is difficult to reach; one of the most common routes to climb it involves ascending over Challenger Glacier on the northern slopes of the summit. Mount Challenger is one of the higher peaks in the Picket Range .

climate

Mount Challenger is located in the climatic zone of the Marine West Coast of western North America . Most of the weather fronts come across the Pacific and move northeast towards the Cascade Range . When the fronts reach the North Cascades , they are forced to ascend by the high peaks ( orographic congestion ), which causes them to lower the high humidity in the form of rain or snow onto the cascades. As a result, the west side of the North Cascades receives high levels of rainfall, particularly in the form of snow in winter. Because of their moderate temperatures and proximity to the ocean, the areas west of the main ridge rarely experience temperatures below 0 ° F (-18 ° C) or above 80 ° F (27 ° C). During the winter months the sky is mostly cloudy or overcast, in the summer months, however, due to the high pressure systems over the Pacific, mostly cloudless. Because of the maritime climate , the snow tends to be wet and heavy, so there is a high risk of avalanches .
