Mount Frere is a city in the South African province of Eastern Cape (Eastern Cape). It is the administrative seat of the Umzimvubu municipality and is located in the Alfred Nzo district .

In 2011, Mount Frere had 5,202 inhabitants (census). Most of the residents speak isiXhosa . The city is also called awaBhaca, after a group of Xhosa resident here . The city lies in a mountainous landscape with deeply cut river valleys. Nearby towns are Mount Ayliff 26 kilometers northeast and Mthatha 98 kilometers southwest.

history

The place was founded in 1876 and named after the later governor of the Cape Colony Henry Bartle Frere . Until 1994, Mount Frere was part of the Transkei .

Economy and Transport

Fruits and maize are grown around Mount Frere, mostly in subsistence farming . Mount Frere is the site of a hospital.

The city is on the National Route 2 , which connects Mount Frere with, among others, Mthatha in the southwest and Mount Ayliff in the northeast.
