The United States Geological Survey mapped it using its own surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1961 to 1967. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1968 after Raymond Robert Heer Jr. (1920–1983), head of the program for atmospheric physics in Antarctica with the National Science Foundation .
