Wittlich Jewish cemetery

The Jewish cemetery Wittlich is a cemetery in the district town of Wittlich in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate . It stands as a cultural monument under monument protection .

The Jewish cemetery is west of the city and east of Hof Failz. It can be reached via a dirt road that branches off to the left from federal road 50 (towards Himmerod).

In the cemetery, which was laid out around 1670 at the latest and occupied until 1941, there are 162 older, weathered, classicist and historicist tombstones . Two tombstones from 1672 have been preserved. In 1943 the cemetery was forcibly sold to the city for one hundred Reichsmarks , and in 1949 it was returned to the Jewish community of Trier. The gravestones, which were violently overturned during the Nazi era , were erected again by the city of Wittlich. In 1970, 1971, 1972, 1983 and 1987 the cemetery was desecrated . In 1987, 111 of the 162 tombstones were knocked over and partially destroyed.
