history
A Jewish community existed in Zeltingen from the 18th century until 1938/39. In 1808 five Jewish families with 33 people lived in the village. By 1850 Zeltingen had 46 Jewish residents, about four percent of the total population. In 1895 there were 78 Jewish people living in Zeltingen and Rachtig; by 1924 there were 54. After 1933, all 48 members of the Jewish Jewish community moved away or emigrated due to the consequences of the economic boycott, increasing disenfranchisement and reprisals. In 1939 the last Jewish resident left his hometown.
In Zeltingen there is an old and a new Jewish cemetery . The old Jewish cemetery was occupied in the 19th century until around 1876. It is located north of the village on a slope above the Catholic Church of St. Stephen and the vineyards of the Oberbach valley "Im Engelter". The cemetery was completely overgrown by bushes and trees and was only exposed again in 2013.
There are six tombstones ( mazewot ) in the cemetery . The inscriptions on the tombstones are all in Hebrew script.
