history
A Jewish community existed in Zeltingen from the 18th century until 1938/39. In 1895 Zeltingen and Rachtig had a total of 78 Jewish residents. Around 1924 there were 54 Jewish people living in the two places. After 1933, all 48 members of the Jewish Jewish community had moved away or emigrated due to the consequences of the economic boycott , increasing disenfranchisement and reprisals. In 1939 the last Jewish resident left his hometown.
In Zeltingen there is an old and a new Jewish cemetery. The new Jewish cemetery was created in 1876 about 160 meters above Zeltingen in a forest for the villages of Zeltingen and Rachtig. In 1879 a cemetery wall was built. There are over 60 tombstones ( mazewot ) on this part of the cemetery . An expansion of the cemetery followed between 1927 and 1929. This part is fenced and still has five tombstones. The last funerals took place in the late 1930s.
