The Mount Leura is a volcanic crater in the geological Newer Volcanics Province in the southeast of the city Camperdown in western Victoria , Australia . The crater is 121 km southwest of Melbourne . Volcanic eruptions on this mountain are said to have occurred 5,000 to 20,000 years ago.

The Mount Leura is part of a larger geological complex, because next to it is another smaller crater, Mount Sugarloaf , and at the foot of Mount Leura is the Laura Maar .

Mount Leura

The crater of Mount Leura rises 313 meters above sea level, about 130 meters above the terrain and it is about 100 meters deep. Traces of a second volcanic eruption and other smaller tuff eruptions can be seen within the crater . In the crater walls there are further deposits of tuff , rock debris and volcanic bombs . These are likely to have originated from eruptions along the crevice that runs north-south in this area.

The tuffs of Mount Leura contain numerous inclusions of the highly heated deep-lying earth's crust and the earth's mantle in unusually high concentrations.

Leura Maar

The Leura Maar is a maar that is 2.5 kilometers long, 1.7 kilometers wide and 50 meters deep. It was formed in a series of volcanic eruptions, probably 22,000 years ago.

Mount Sugarloaf

The Mount Sugarloaf is another volcanic crater on the southwest flank of Mount Leura is located. It has a perfectly shaped volcanic mouth. This shape was created in the first stage of the activity of Mount Leura when a small adjacent crater opening hurled a large volume of lava fragments into the air next to the main column of Mount Leura in a short time . This created a steep crater of volcanic ash , tuff, large rock debris and volcanic bombs.

tourism

The Mount Leura can be reached by vehicles. A hiking trail leads to the summit, from where further volcanic elevations can be seen if the visibility is good. There are picnic tables and seats at the foot of the mountain . Accommodation is available in the nearby town of Camperdowns.

Others

The Aborigines of the Djargurd Wurrung lived in the area of the volcanoes before the European settlement . The name Leura is said to mean big nose in their language .

The Europeans used the rock deposits there to build their structures and roads. In the area of the Leura Maar there were numerous quarries that give an insight into the tufa layers and the xenolites embedded in them. There are currently two quarries in the northeast of Mount Leura , the older quarries are closed or are used to deposit soil.
