The city is 440 meters above sea level on the northern limit of the Adelaide Hills . The origin of the town's name is not known for certain, but it is generally believed that the town was named after a Mrs. Pleasant, a relative of one of the early settlers. In 2007, 593 people lived in Mount Pleasant. Mount Pleasant is part of the Barossa Council , although some outskirts are in the Mid Murray Council .
history
The first European explorers came through the Barossa Valley in 1838. One of the first settlers in the Mount Pleasant area was James Phillis. He had arrived in Adelaide in 1839 and was riding through the Adelaide Hills in search of a suitable piece of land. Phillis settled on Mount Pleasant in 1843 and grew wheat, which he sold in Adelaide. With the profit he sailed to England and bought a herd of Romney sheep there . Phillis became one of the richest and most successful farmers in the area over the years.
Gold was found in the Mount Pleasant area in the 1860s. The gold finds were small, however, so that the prospectors quickly moved on. The city was the terminus of the Balhannah railway line for several decades . There the railway ran from Adelaide to Melbourne . The railway line opened on September 16, 1918 and closed on March 4, 1963. The rails have since been completely dismantled, but the corridor can be seen from some streets.
