Mount Shear is a mountain over 4000 m high in the West Antarctic Ellsworthland . In the Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains, it rises 6.5 km northwest of Mount Tyree .
It was discovered by the so-called Marie Byrd Land Traverse Party , a team mainly to explore the Marie Byrd Land between 1957 and 1958. They named the mountain after the American geographer James Algan Shear (1919–1983) in 1957 Scientific Director of the Hallett Station during the International Geophysical Year .
