The Danube ferry Mariaposching – Stephansposching is a ferry connection over the Danube at river kilometer 2297.26 in the Lower Bavarian Gäuboden .

It connects the district road SR 35 in the district of Straubing-Bogen , which ends in Mariaposching, with the Deggendorfer district road DEG 13 in Stephansposching . The ferry operator is the Straubing-Bogen district, which receives part of the uncovered costs from the Deggendorf district . Due to an accident on April 19, 2016, the ferry service was stopped and resumed on April 3, 2019 with a new ferry.

history

A ferry connection has existed here since 1870 , and the vehicle was renewed in 1927. The formerly privately operated ferry has been under municipal care since 1981 and carries up to 20,000 passengers a year.

Average on April 19, 2016

On April 19, 2016, the yaw ferry sank during the crossing. It was loaded with a tractor combination and a pickup truck. The three people on board, the ferryman and two passengers, were able to swim to the shore and were hypothermic, but were otherwise unharmed taken to the hospital. The ferry came to rest in the fairway at a depth of approx. 2.50 m, with the loaded van being driven away 200 m. On April 21, 2016, the tractor team and the ferry itself were recovered using two special ships. The aborted van was lifted on April 20, 2016. The first results of the investigation indicate that the ferry is overloaded and that a technical defect cannot be assumed. The hull and the high rope system appeared to be largely intact after the rescue work was completed, but the ferry had suffered damage to the load-bearing structure, broken rivet connections and dents. According to an expert opinion by the ÖSWAG , it is impossible to repair the ferry vessel. The ferry service has been suspended until further notice.

Re-establishment of the ferry connection

In the district council of the Straubing-Bogen district, a controversy arose as to whether a cable ferry or a motor ferry should be purchased as a replacement. In the district of Deggendorf, the Federal Nature Conservation Association initiated a signature campaign for a technically simpler and more sustainable yaw ferry instead of a motor-driven vehicle. In April 2017, the district administrator of the Straubing-Bogen district, Josef Laumer , announced that, following an agreement with the Deggendorf district and the relevant resolutions of the district committee and district council, a motor-driven ferry would be procured. Following a Europe-wide invitation to tender, the order was placed with the Stahlbau Günter Müller shipyard in Spessart in summer 2017 . The new ferry will have a diesel-electric drive . The launch of the new ferry in Remagen took place on December 6, 2018 with a delay of several months due to the low water level in the Rhine in 2018 . With the newly built motor ferry Posching , which arrived in Mariaposching by water in February 2019, regular ferry operations were resumed on April 3, 2019.
