Mount Thornton is a 700 m high nunatak in the West Antarctic Ellsworthland . In the east-central part of the Snow Nunatakker on the English coast, it rises between Mount McCann and Mount Benkert .
He was discovered and photographed during the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named him in 1968 after Captain Richard Thornton, commander of the USNS Eltanin icebreaker during the Antarctic voyages between 1967 and 1968.
