Seyyed Abdolkarim Mousavi Ardebili ( listen ? / I ; PersianAudio file / audio sample عبدالکریم موسوی اردبیلی, * January 28, 1926 in Ardabil ; † November 23, 2016 in Tehran ) was a Shiite clergyman with the title Grand Ayatollah and a politician of Iran .

Ardebili belonged to the inner circle of the Revolutionary Council around Ruhollah Khomeini during his exile in France. He was also a founding member of the Islamic Republican Party and took over the management of the Foundation for the Weak , the renamed and wealthy Pahlavi Foundation.

After the death of Mohammad Beheschti on June 28, 1981, Khomeini appointed Ayatollah Ardebili to the influential position of chairman of the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran until he was replaced by Mohammed Yazdi in 1989 by the new chief legal scholar Seyyed Ali Khamene'i . At the same time he was a member of the Expert Council .
