Move ( English for moving ) is an English-language pop song with which the group The Mamas won the 2020 Melodifestivalen . It was written by Herman Gardarfve, Melanie Wehbe and Patrik Jean. With the title they should represent Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

Background and production

The Mamas in the final of the Melodifestival 2020

The group, consisting of Ashley Haynes, Loulou Lamotte and Dinah Yonas Manna, took part in the Melodifestivalen with John Lundvik the year before , where they achieved first place with Too Late for Love and represented Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Tel Aviv . On November 26th, Sveriges Television announced that The Mamas would be attending the 2020 Melodifestivalen.

The group qualified for the final from the semi-finals that took place on February 1, 2020. The final took place on March 7th, in which the group emerged victorious with 137 points and one point ahead.

The title was written and composed by Melanie Wehbe, Patrik Jean and Herman Gardarfve. Gardarfve also produced it. He was also responsible for recording and mixing with Mike Eriksson . The mastering was done by Holger Lagerfeldt. Wehbe already participated as a composer in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 for Denmark with the title Love Is Forever . She was also a backing singer for the UK and the song Bigger Than Us that same year .

Music and lyrics

The song consists of two stanzas. The chorus is surrounded by a pre and post chorus. The bridge is sung after the second repetition of the chorus and at the end of the song. In terms of content, it's about cheering up and motivating each other when you're feeling bad. The song is influenced by soul and gospel music . The song title appears in the chorus, which sings about the fact that there is no mountain that the singer would not move for his counterpart ( There ain't no mountain, baby, that I wouldn't move ).

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Sweden should have performed this song in the first semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.

reception

Markus Larsson of the Aftonbladet wrote that while the group was a worthy winner, it didn't win the best song. Move has similarities with last year's title Too Late for Love and has to be satisfied with a top 10 placement, but is not a winning song .

The ESCXtra blog praised the good interaction between the interpreters on stage. Eurovisionary said the song had a positive vibe and was full of energy. According to ESC Kompakt, the song was "not a contribution from the drawing board trimmed to win". It is solid, but “not really something new”. In particular, the title is not as strong as the previous Swedish Grand Prix contribution.

Publication and commercial success

The single has been available for download since February 22, 2020. The Hogland Remix and the Rich Edwards Remix were released as remixes on July 17th.
