history

Mid-1980s are Wilhelm Schwind, his wife and friends often to the cinema Freistadt from Wolfgang Steininger down, there to enjoy a program line with filmmakers films in the original. After a while the constant journey to Freistadt became too difficult for them, and they decided to start a similar project in Linz. The non-profit association for the promotion of communicative cinema culture was founded. Wolfgang Steininger could be won as managing director.

The Upper Austria Open House of Culture serves as the location . The building dates from the 1930s and has hardly been changed from the outside. The Moviemento was opened in 1990. At that time it consisted of only two halls. To set up the Moviemento, 500,000 schillings (around 36,000 euros ) were initially available. This was financed through private loans. During renovation work later, the foyer area was renewed and modernized.

Association for the promotion of communicative cinema culture

Wilhelm Schwind has been chairman and Wolfgang Steininger managing director since the association was founded. With the Moviemento, the association wanted to create a place where people can communicate through films and through films. The pleasant and relaxed atmosphere of the Gelbes Krokodil restaurant and the Solaris bar provide a good opportunity to reflect on and discuss the films you have seen.

In 2000 the City-Kino was taken over, which has two cinema halls. Room 1 has space for 136 people, room 2 has 58 seats. Since then, two arthouse cinemas - the Moviemento and the City-Kino - as well as the Gelbes Krokodil restaurant and the Solaris bar have been in the hands of the association for the promotion of communicative cinema culture.

Finances and grants

In 1990, when it opened, the Moviemento had 35,000 cinema-goers. Ten years later there were already 55,000 visitors. The number of visitors increased every year thanks to a first-class selection of films and appealing thematic focuses. In 2009, a record was set with around 145,000 visitors.

The Moviemento receives joint funding of around 50 euro cents per visitor from the city and the country, which in 2009 led to funding of around 72,000 euros. In comparison, the Gartenbaukino in Vienna receives EUR 400,000 a year from the City of Vienna. Low subsidies, expensive digitization measures and strict safety requirements make the operators difficult. The costs for digitizing a hall alone amount to 68,000 euros.

Furnishing

The Moviemento has three cinema halls. The newest cinema, which was added in autumn 2007, contains 129 cinema armchairs and two places for wheelchairs. This room is equipped with a Dolby Digital Surround EX . Room 2 has 83 seats. The smallest room, room 3, has 44 seats.

Up to October 2011, 35 mm automatic projection and a digital and analog sound system were used for broadcasting. At the end of October 2011, digital projection systems were installed in all three halls . Most of the film screenings will be digital from this point on.

Media library

Media library

The Moviemento media library is located in the checkout area and foyer. It is a DVD and Blu-ray rental company. Older classics and current films can be borrowed here. Under the direction of Manfred Peter Müller, the selection of the media library is continuously increasing. There are now over 2000 DVDs here.

gastronomy

The Gelbes Krokodil restaurant and the Solaris bar are operated together with the cinema in the Open Culture House . The Yellow Crocodile is directly connected to the Moviemento and mainly offers regional and vegetarian dishes. The Solaris bar acts as a scene meeting place. At the weekend, DJs provide the right music.

Program and special features

Mainly current films as well as film classics, documentaries, children's films and thematic focuses are shown. Premieres also take place very often in the Moviemento. Usually the respective directors and some actors are guests. After the premieres there will be discussion rounds where visitors can get in direct contact with the filmmakers.

90% of the films are shown in their original version. Most of them are subtitled. Those responsible see the original language as indispensable for an authentic film screening. The share of Austrian films is around a third. Furthermore, a lot of emphasis is placed on the projection formats. Correct sound and image formats are the rule in Moviemento. Films should be shown as intended by the filmmakers.

In recent years, event concepts that go beyond simple film screenings have been designed again and again. Corresponding thematic focuses establish connections between films and various areas of culture and life. Social and development issues are repeatedly taken up in order - in combination with film events and discussions - to enable a new and interesting approach to social problems.

There is a close cooperation with the Art University Linz . The BEST OFF event has been held every autumn since 2003 . On this day, selected films by the Linz art students will be presented. In addition to film screenings, the Moviemento's rooms are often used during the year for presentations by students at the Linz Art University.

In the summer months, the OK square in front of the Moviemento is used for film screenings. Furthermore, the Moviemento art house cinema is one of the venues for the Nextcomic Festival (Linz) , which has been taking place annually since 2009.

Development film days

The development film days , organized by the Interdisciplinary Research Institute for Development Cooperation at the University of Linz , have been taking place in Moviemento since 2004 . This program, which lasts several days, has established itself as a small, alternative film festival. In the Moviemento special, topic-related films are shown, which are intended to stimulate the visitors to think. In the adjacent Gelbes Krokodil restaurant , suitable country-specific dishes from the focus country are offered. Lectures and discussions round off the offer. After the main topics such as Sudan , Laos and Vietnam and Bhutan , the 8th Development Film Days in November 2011 were dedicated to the topic of Ethiopia - Hunger in Abundance .

International children's film festival

The International Children's Film Festival has been held every November since 2005. Up to and including 2016, the festival was organized by Kinderfreunde OÖ in cooperation with Moviemento. Since 2017, the cinema has taken over the sole organization of the event. Films for children and young people from all over the world are shown. Introductions to the films and pedagogical basic sheets should enable the children to better understand the films. Most of the films are shown in their original version in order to bring young visitors closer to other cultures and languages. The films are dubbed live by an actor so that they can also be understood by the children.

Awards

In 2016, the Linz Moviemento and the CityKino were named “Best Cinema in Europe”.
