Mozart's children's violin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mozart's children's violin was made by the Austrian violin and lute maker Andreas Ferdinand Mayr , whohad his workshopin the violin maker's house in Salzburg , Steingasse 25.

The violin was built in the 1740s, probably around 1746. The size of the instrument is between a quarter and a half violin . The name of the builder is written on a piece of paper inside the violin. On April 24, 1792, the court trumpeter Johann Andreas Schachtner reported in a letter to Marianne Berchtold zu Sonnenburg how the four-year-old Mozart had played on this instrument. Schachtner also had a violin that made a very soft sound, which is why Mozart called it a "butter violin".

There is evidence that Mozart's children's violin was owned by Mozart's sister Maria Anna Mozart (Nannerl) until 1820 . Via detours, the instrument came into the possession of the Austrian ambassador to the Holy See in Rome, Ludwig von Paar, in 1877 . His son handed the violin over to the International Mozarteum Foundation in 1896 , which has owned the violin ever since. It is exhibited in the Mozarthaus .

In April 2018 the violin was played by Anna Cäcilia Pföß on the state visit of the Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen to the People's Republic of China . The prelude took place at a state banquet hosted by President Xi Jinping .
