Violin notes

Andreas Ferdinand Mayr ( 1693 in Vienna-St. Veit - July 28, 1764 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian violin and lute maker.

Due to a wrong reading of his violin notes, Mayr is sometimes referred to as Mayrhof in literature.

life and work

“Baroque violin making in Salzburg created many masterpieces of string and plucked instruments, which are evidenced by names such as Michael Gartner , Marcell Pichler , Ulrich Rämbhardt , Johannes Schorn and Andreas Ferdinand Mayr.” So much for the Salzburg Museum , whose collection includes a double bass of the violin maker is located. The ÖML lists: “8 violins, viola, violoncello; Tenor viola (1746, lost); Lutes. " Willibald Leo von Lütgendorff-Leinburg writes:

“In his violins he followed the Stainer model ; His work is meticulous, the paint is dark red or brown, and the tone is quite good. His instruments are in the violin making tradition of Jakob Stainer . His most famous work is Mozart's children's violin , which he probably created in 1746.

Mayr was JP Schorn's successor as court lute maker and violin maker . Through his marriage to the widow of Jacob Weiß in 1719, he was related to this violin and lute maker. In 1730 he married a second time. His children included:

• Ferdinand (April 10, 1720 in Salzburg - February 4, 1787 there), who became his successor, and
• Andreas (approx. 1731 in Salzburg - March 6, 1794 there), presumably also a violin maker, 1759–94 violinist of the Salzburg court orchestra .

The highest known auction price for one of his violins is $ 13,428 (July 2003).
