Mr. Lif (born December 11, 1977 in Boston , Massachusetts , USA , real name Jeffrey Haynes ) is an American rapper . He was one of the first artists to be signed to El-P 's Definitive Jux label . He is also a member of The Perceptionists group .

Life

Mr. Lif grew up in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston and began rapping in the late 1990s. In 1998 he released his first single, Elektro , which attracted attention from Definitive Jux and Grand Royal labels . About the latter, his second single, Farmhand / Settle the Score , was released a year later . In 2000 he was signed to Definitive Jux (then Def Jux). In November of the same year his debut EP, Enters the Colossus , was released, on which Mr. Lif first worked with his label boss El-P . He was also featured on a song from the group Deltron 3030's self-titled debut album . His live album Live in the Middle East was released in 2001 through Ozone Records. In 2002 his second EP Emergency Rations was released and later his official debut album I Phantom , both via Definitive Jux. On El-P's album Fantastic Damage , Mr. Lif is featured with a guest part (on the song Blood , together with C-Rayz Walz).

In 2005, Mr. Lif formed the hip-hop group The Perceptionists with acrobatics and DJ Fakts One , who released their album Black Dialogue on Definitive Jux that same year .

His second solo album Mo 'Mega was released in 2006 via Definitive Jux and was largely produced by El-P. Feature guests are the rappers Aesop Rock , Murs and Blueprint.

In 2009 his third album I Heard it Today was released , after a breakup with Definitive Jux via Bloodbot Tactical. The album is, like its predecessors, politically oriented and often socially critical.
