Muchtarbai Ötelbajuly Ötelbajew ( Kazakh Мұхтарбай Өтелбайұлы Өтелбаев , Russian Мухтарбай Отелбаевич Отелбаев Muchtarbai Otelbajewitsch Otelbajew , English transcription Mukhtarbay Otelbaev; *  3. October 1942 in Georgijewka ) is a mathematician from Kazakhstan . He deals with partial differential equations and functional analysis .

Career

Ötelbajew studied mathematics from 1966 at Lomonossow University with a diploma in 1969, his doctorate (candidate title) in 1972 with Boris Moissejewitsch Levitan (on the spectrum of some differential operators, Russian) and his habilitation (Russian doctorate) in 1978 (with Anatoli Gordejewitsch Kostyutschenko). He was laboratory director at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences and is now professor at the Eurasian National University in Nur-Sultan and director of the University's Mathematical Institute.

Among other things, he dealt with the spectral theory of differential operators with non-smooth coefficients, integral operators, general theory of boundary value problems , Navier-Stokes equation (on which he has been researching for several decades), the nonlinear Schrödinger equation , Sturm-Liouville and Dirac operators.

In 1989 he became a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR and in 2004 of the National Academy of Sciences in Kazakhstan. In 2002 he was named Scientist of the Year in Kazakhstan and in 2004 he was a prize-winner of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) in the science and technology category. In 2007 he received the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Science and Technology.

He published over 200 papers and supervised over 70 doctoral students (2013).

In January 2014 he announced that he had solved the Millennium Problem for the Navier-Stokes equation , the proof of the existence of a strong solution. However, just a month after the papers were published, mathematicians discovered that the proof was incomplete and that there was a gross error on page 56. Ötelbajew was made aware of this and admitted the mistake himself.
