Abalá is a municipality in the Mexican state of Yucatán . The municipality extends over an area of 293.5 km², the 2010 census counted 6356 inhabitants in the municipality. The administrative center is Abalá of the same name , while the most populous place is Uayalceh .

geography

The Municipio Abalá is located in the western center of the state at an altitude of less than 100 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Yucatán peninsula , to its sub-province of the Yucatec Karst and to the hydrographic region of Yucatán Norte . With a good 99.5% of the municipality area, limestone dominates the geology of the municipality and Leptosol as the soil type. Almost 82% of the area of the municipality is taken up by rainforest, 16% is used for arable farming.

The Municipio Abalá borders the Municipios Tecoh , Timucuy , Umán , Mérida , Chocholá , Sacalum and Opichén .

population

In the 2010 census, 6356 people were counted in 1606 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 3799 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 3716 speakers of the Mayathan . A good 17% of the population was illiterate. 2440 residents of Abalá were registered as economically active, of which almost 76% were men and a good 2.5% were unemployed. 17% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
