Chalcatongo de Hidalgo is a municipality in the Mixteca region of the Mexican state of Oaxaca . The municipality is about 59 km from the district capital Tlaxiaco and 200 km from the capital of the state, Oaxaca de Juarez , and comprises 27 localities. Chalcatongo de Hidalgo , the administrative seat and largest place of the municipality, is known as the birthplace of the controversial governor of Oaxaca Ulises Ruiz Ortiz .

The municipality had a population of 8481 in the 2010 census, the area of ​​the municipality is 135.2 km².

geography

Chalcatongo de Hidalgo is located in the south of the Tlaxiaco district . Most of the municipality is hilly, the municipality is located at an altitude between 1300  m and 3000  m in the Sierra Madre del Sur , at the transition from the Sierra Mixteca to the coastal mountains in the catchment area of ​​the Río Atoyac . The predominant rock is the limestone , the Phaeozem predominates as the soil type . Almost half of the municipality is forested, a good 40% of the area is used for agriculture.

The Municipio Chalcatongo de Hidalgo borders on the Municipios San Pablo Tijaltepec , Santa Catarina Ticuá , San Miguel el Grande , San Pedro Molinos , Santa Catarina Yosonotú , Santiago Yosondúa , Santo Domingo Ixcatlán , Santa Cruz Tacahua and Santa Lucía Monteverde .

The climate in the area of ​​the municipality is cool and dry. Rain falls partly in spring, throughout summer and parts of autumn. In winter, temperatures can drop to -3 ° C.

population

The population is mainly Mixtec , with a second Zapotec descent. Over 80% of the population are Catholics who are looked after by the parish run by Capuchins .

In addition to the administrative seat Chalcatongo de Hidalgo (2447 inhabitants), there are another 26 localities in the municipality . Three of them have over 500 inhabitants: Progreso , Chapultepec and Aldama .

Infrastructure

Schools of various levels are located in the municipality, ranging from preschool through primary and secondary school to high school. Health care is provided by a hospital in the main town. Since 1995 a paved road has been leading from the district town of Tlaxiaco to Chalcatongo de Hidalgo, which can be reached daily from Tlaxiaco and Oaxaca via several buses and shared taxis (Colectivos). The various localities are administered by municipal and police offices. On the weekly market day, the farmers in the area offer their goods. There are a small number of stationary shops, such as B. a meat or liquor dealer.

Flora and fauna

The largest part of the trees are pines , to a lesser extent the red and white holm oak , strawberry trees , junipers and ash trees can also be found. Peaches , pears , apples , the Kapollin cherry , Tejocote (Mexican hawthorn ) and various herbs are planted or harvested as fruits . Wildlife includes coyotes , foxes , skunks , rabbits , real hares and tlacuaches . Cattle , domestic goats , sheep , donkeys , pigs and horses are kept as farm animals .
