Ocampo is a municipality in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas . The municipality covers an area of ​​1480.8 km² and, according to the 2010 census, has a population of 12,962. The administrative seat and largest town of the municipality is Ocampo of the same name .

geography

The municipality of Ocampo is located in the southwest of the state of Tamaulipas at an altitude between 50  m and 1800  m . Almost all of it belongs to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre Oriental , only 0.1% of the area is counted to the coastal plains of the northern Gulf. The municipality lies entirely in the catchment area of ​​the Río Pánuco . The geology of the municipality consists of about 40% limestone , 22% lutite , 18% basalt and 11% alluvion , the soil type of over 59% of the municipality is the leptosol with 25% vertisol . More than 70% of the community area is forested, around 25% are used for agriculture.

The municipality of Ocampo borders the municipalities of Tula , Palmillas , Jaumave , Gómez Farías , El Mante , Antiguo Morelos and Nuevo Morelos as well as the state of San Luis Potosí .

In the 2010 census, 12,962 people were counted in 3,687 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 36 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 11 speakers of Huasteco . 8.5% of the population was illiterate. 4,333 residents were registered as economically active, of which approx. 84% were men and 2.6% were unemployed. Over eleven percent of the population lived in extreme poverty.
