Jun Murai

Jun Murai ( Japanese 村井 純 Murai Jun ; born March 29, 1955 in Tokyo ) is a Japanese mathematician , computer scientist and university professor. He is known as the "Father of the Internet in Japan" and "Internet Samurai". In 2013 he was inducted into the Internet Society's Internet Hall of Fame and in 2019 he received the Knight of the Legion of Honor from the French government.

life and work

Murai comes from a family of educators. His maternal grandfather, Osada Arata, was President of Hiroshima University, where he taught education. His father Minoru was Professor of Education at Keiō University , his mother Noriko Professor of Music at Ferris University. Murai studied mathematics in the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Science and Technology at Graduated Keio University, where he graduated in 1979 and received his Masters in Computer Science in 1981. In 1984 he became an assistant at the Computer Center of the Tokyo Institute of Technology and from 1987 he did research as an assistant at the Computer Center of the University of Tokyo . In 1987 he received his PhD in Computer Science from Keio University , where he became Associate Professor in the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies in 1990. In 1997 he became a professor there and from 1999 to 2005 he headed the Keio Research Institute at SFC. He then served as Vice President of Keio University until 2005 and has been Dean of the Faculty of Environmental and Information Sciences at Keio University since 2009. He is chairman or member of numerous government committees and active in international scientific associations: among others in the Japan Network Information Center (JPNIC), in the Information Security Policy Council, member of the IT Strategy Headquarters of the Cabinet Secretariat of Japan. He was involved in various technical conferences and committees: 1992 as Chairman of the local arrangement group of INET92 in Kobe ; 1998 to 2003 as Board of Director of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN); 2000 as Program Co-Chair of INET2000; 2004 as General Chair of ACM / SIGMOBILE-Mobihoc 2004; 2007 as General Chair of SIGCOMM 2007; 2008 member of the Science Council of Japan ; 2008 as a member of the Global Agenda Council of the World Economic Forum ; In 2009 on the Executive Committee of the 76th The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
