Murzim , also Mirza or Mirzam , is the name of the star Beta Canis Maioris . The traditional Arabic name isمرزم'Herald, Harbinger', and presumably refers to his position since he is the Harbinger of Sirius , i.e. H. rises before him and announces him, the brightest star in the night sky.
Murzim is a blue supergiant (spectral type B1II-III), the brightness of which fluctuates between +1.95 mag and +2.00 mag with a period of 6 hours (type Beta Cephei). It is about 500 light years away from Earth (Hipparcos database).
In ancient Egypt , Murzim belonged as a minor star to the ancient Egyptian constellation Sopdet .
The IAU Working Group on Star Names (WGSN) has the proper name on July 20, 2016 Mirzam defined as standardized proper name for this star.
