The Musée d'art et d'histoire in the city of Saint-Denis is a municipal history museum, it was founded in 1901 and was located in the former Hôtel-Dieu. The city bought a former monastery in 1972 , in which Carmelites had lived until 1957 . The buildings were converted for use as a museum, making sure that the ambience was preserved as much as possible, including the 174 wall slogans of the Carmelite convent. The opening took place in May 1981.

The museum contains collections on the following topics:

The museum also has an extensive archaeological collection with finds from excavations around and in the cathedral of Saint-Denis . During the excavations, a necropolis from the Merovingian era was found.

In 1982 the museum was selected by the European Museum Forum as European Museum of the Year , and the UNESCO jury said that the museum was one of the most important to have emerged since the Second World War.

In 2009 the museum was expanded to include a garden of the five senses, with the aim of giving blind and visually impaired people, but also everyone else, the opportunity to explore their senses. The garden extends over the old garden areas of the convent and has been planted with 30 old plants that were also used by the nuns. It is accessible from spring to autumn. The work for this was carried out by disabled young people from the l'Institut médico-éducatif (IME).

history

The monastery was founded in 1625 by seven Carmelites from the Convent of Amiens as the 37th monastery of the Order near the Cathedral of Saint-Denis . In 1628 the cornerstone of the first church was laid by Queen Maria de 'Medici . When the convent found itself in financial difficulties in 1770, Louise-Marie de Bourbon , the seventh daughter of King Louis XV, entered. to enter the monastery. She was prioress of the convent from 1773 to 1779 and from 1785 until her death in 1787 .

In 1784 the monastery was extended by Richard Mique to include the Carmel Chapel in the neoclassical style as part of extensive restorations . From 1895 to 1993 this was used as a district court. This also explains the inscription "Justice de Paix" on the pediment. The domed church has the plan of a Greek cross. The peristyle with four Ionic columns represents the adoration of the kings . The interior was designed very richly by the sculptor Joseph Deschamps . The church is now part of the museum and is used for cultural events.
