Musa Kâzım Efendi

Musa Kâzım Efendi (* 1858 in Erzurum , Turkey , † 1920 in Edirne ) was an author and Sheikhul Islam in the Ottoman Empire . He was Bektashit .

Life

He received his clerical training in Balıkesir from Selahaddin Ali Şuuri and Lutfi Efendi and in İstanbul from Kazasker Eşref and Hoca Şakir Efendi. After that he worked as a teacher for a while.

He was in four government cabinets of the Committee for Unity and Progress ( İttihat ve Terakki Cemiyeti ) under the Grand Viziers İbrahim Hakkı Pascha , Mehmed Said Pascha , Said Halim Pascha and Talât Pascha, the then Sheikhulislam. He was also a member of his party's science commission.

Wolfgang G. Schwanitz writes about his role in Turkey's entry into the war in 1914:

The Dutch Arabist Hurgronje was not affected by the intoxication of war. He saw himself challenged (on the contrary) when, in mid-November 1914, the highest Ottoman legal scholar, the Sheikh of Islam, legitimized the jihad alongside the Germans. This happened just as the Germans had discussed it with the Turks.

After the First World War he was sentenced along with the other leaders of his party and died in Edirne in 1920.

According to the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Turkey , Kâzım Efendi was a Freemason .
