Museums am Meer ( spelling museen am Meer ) is an amalgamation of eight scientific collections and museums located directly in the center of Kiel .

The project

Belong to the association

The three public sponsors of these eight museums are the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, the GEOMAR / Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel and the state capital Kiel . In 2010 they signed a cooperation agreement with the aim of developing the joint brand museums am Meer . Since 2011, the eight museums have been pooling their resources for the three-year EU project and developing ideas and offers under the museen am Meer brand to increase the attractiveness of downtown Kiel for visitors. The focus of the group's activities is primarily on a joint marketing strategy and the development of special programs for all age groups.

The houses

Antique collection in the Kunsthalle zu Kiel

The collection of antiques, founded in 1843 in the building of the Kunsthalle zu Kiel, is the only collection in Schleswig-Holstein that collects, researches and presents works of ancient cultures from the Mediterranean region. The museum has an extensive collection of ancient original works (Greek clay pots and ancient cabaret) as well as a large collection of casts of the most important sculptures of the Greeks and Romans (including Parthenon sculptures, Apollo Belvedere , Laocoon ).

Aquarium Geomar

The aquarium at the GEOMAR / Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel shows native and exotic sea creatures in a natural environment. In 16 pools, visitors can marvel at animals in the natural habitats of the North and Baltic Seas , the North Atlantic and the tropical coral reefs . Modern circulation technology and the latest scientific findings guarantee that the sensitive sea creatures are kept in a species-appropriate manner.

Kiel art gallery

The Kunsthalle zu Kiel is a museum and a university institute of the Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel. The house, inaugurated in 1909, is also the seat of the Schleswig-Holstein Art Association, founded in 1843. The collection includes works from the Dürer period to the present day, from painting to video art. The focus of the collection is on the so-called Russian traveling painters of the 19th century, German Expressionists and New Objectivity artists, as well as the largest collection of works by the painter Christian Rohlfs . Since 2011, the graphic collection has been showing changing exhibitions from its holdings in rooms permanently furnished for it.

Medical and pharmaceutical history collection

The Medical and Pharmaceutical History Collection of the University of Kiel shows exciting insights into the history of pharmaceuticals over the past centuries and allows visitors to experience medical research and treatment methods of the past up close. Numerous historical instruments and devices, particularly from Kiel and Schleswig-Holstein, await museum visitors. More than 500 pathological and forensic medicated preparations provide an insight into the history of medical training at Kiel University.

Maritime Museum

The imposing fish hall from 1910 directly at the port of Kiel has housed the Kiel Maritime Museum since 1978. In the historical building, the maritime history of the port, naval and shipyard city of Kiel is presented in a permanent exhibition. With numerous maritime objects, the permanent collection tells the story of the seaside city of Kiel and its maritime connections all over the world.

City Gallery Kiel

The Stadtgalerie Kiel is located in the center of Kiel opposite the Holstenplatz. In its 1,200 m² large, spacious exhibition rooms, exhibitions of contemporary art are primarily shown. The focus is on changing exhibitions on art from the Baltic Sea region as well as regional and international contemporary art. The art collection of the Stadtgalerie Kiel contains works from the 20th and 21st centuries by regional artists from Expressionism to the present day. One focus is the work of graduates of the Muthesius Art Academy . In a permanent exhibition, the Heinrich Ehmsen Foundation offers an overview of the painterly and graphic work of the expressionist artist Heinrich Ehmsen, who was born in Kiel .

Warleberger Hof City and Maritime Museum

The city museum is located in the Warleberger Hof, the oldest still preserved noble court in Kiel from the early 17th century with a medieval vaulted cellar. The building has been extensively renovated in recent years. Today, it offers a barrier-free ambience on three floors for a variety of special exhibitions on the city and cultural history of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Zoological Museum

The Zoological Museum in Kiel presents findings from modern marine research , the Cluster of Excellence " The Future Ocean " and evolutionary research. The unique, brightly lit building is a Martin-Gropius-Bau from the middle of the 19th century of architectural world renown. The museum houses the most species-rich whale exhibition in Germany with 13 skeletons of whales from Schleswig-Holstein.
