The Museo Nazionale Storico degli Alpini ( dt. "National Historical Museum of the Alpini", also called "Alpini Museum" for short; formerly Museo Storico delle Truppe Alpine ) is a military museum in the northern Italian city of Trento . It documents the history of the Italian mountain troops . These include the Alpini as mountain hunters , as well as other troops specializing in the mountains from other branches of arms such as the mountain artillery or the mountain pioneers .

location

The museum is located on the Doss Trento hill (also called Monte Verruca ). From the Piazzale delle Divisioni Alpine (“Place of the Mountain Divisions”) the Strada degli Alpini (“Alpini Street”) leads to the 300 meter high hill.

history

After the First World War, a mausoleum was built on the hill for the Trento Alpini officer and irredentist Cesare Battisti , who was executed by the Austrians in 1916 in what was then the Austrian town of Trento. Veterans of the Trento Legion , who fought on the side of Italy, suggested building a museum for the Italian mountain troops next to the mausoleum. The fascist government planned the construction of a monumental " Alpini Acropolis ", which should be similar in structure to a Roman castrum . In January 1940, construction crews assigned by all five Italian mountain divisions that existed at the time began building a new road up Verruca Hill. Because of the Second World War , work came to a standstill after the road was completed in the summer of 1942.

After the war, the originally planned museum buildings were not realized. Instead, a much more modest museum was built on the hill from May 1956 to March 1958 on the site of a former ammunition dump. It was expanded for the first time in 1963, and a second extension followed in 1994. A third major renovation began in 2018, which will also include a redesign of the exhibition space.

The Museo Nazionale Storico degli Alpini has been part of the Rete Trentino Grande Guerra museum association since 2009 .

exhibition

There are three guns on display at the main entrance . Inside the museum there is a central exhibition hall around which eight adjoining rooms are arranged. The exhibits include other artillery pieces and light weapons, as well as photos, maps, paintings , uniforms , medals , skis and other pieces of equipment that document the history of the Italian mountain troops since they were founded in 1872. One room is dedicated to the Italian mountain soldiers who were awarded the highest Italian military order ; Their names are engraved on the marble walls. The museum also has a military history library and archive .

A separate museum area is dedicated to the pack animals so important for the mountain troops outside . Memorial stones for the various regiments and other units of the Italian mountain troops were placed along the outer wall .

The museum is maintained by the Italian army . It is currently subordinate to the Territorial Command Trentino-South Tyrol in Trento.
