The Astheim Charterhouse Museum is a museum for Christian visual culture in the Volkach district of Astheim in Lower Franconia. It is located in the buildings of the former monastery of the Carthusian in the village center.

history

The monastery buildings of the former Carthusian monastery in Astheim were initially retained by the Schwarzenberg family after the monastery was dissolved , before the Astheim community established its administrative headquarters there. After incorporation in Volkach in 1972, the city moved the holdings of its archive to the former monastery buildings, but a large part of the buildings remained unused and slowly fell into disrepair.

At the beginning of the 1990s, a citizens' initiative was organized with the Freundeskreis Kartause Astheim to save the monuments. The association held several discussions with the museums of the Diocese of Würzburg and was finally able to arrange for a museum to be set up on the premises. The project management was handed over to the Würzburg cathedral capitular Jürgen Lenssen . The opening of the museum took place on June 10, 1999.

building

The buildings used by the museum are the former Carthusian monastery church, the connecting passage with the Johanneskapelle and the old priory. The buildings date from the 16th to 18th centuries and were extensively renovated before the exhibition was opened . The presentation is completely in the historical buildings, the furnishings of the monastery church have been preserved intact.

exhibition

The exhibition tries to show the development of Christian visual culture in liturgy and popular piety . However, the focus is not on an art-historical approach. Rather, the different approaches to Christ through the centuries should be made clear. This is also reflected in the presentation, which does not draw any boundaries between high art and folk art . The exhibition is characterized by frequent changes in time and style.

The exhibition covers a total area of 18,000 m² in 17 rooms that present 16 themed areas. It occupies a total of three floors, on which around 600 objects from the 14th to the 21st century are shown. These areas are:
