The Archaeological Museum , also known as the Museum of Prehistory and Early History Gunzenhausen , is an archaeological museum in the Middle Franconian town of Gunzenhausen in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district . The focus of the museum, which is located at Brunnenstrasse 1, is on the presentation of the history of the region from the Neolithic to the early Middle Ages . Outstanding objects in the exhibition are grave goods from the Westheim burial ground , as well as Roman, Hallstatt and Latène period finds . In Gunzenhausen there is also the fossil and stone printing museum and the city museum .

history

The museum goes back to the archaeological work of Senior Medical Officer Heinrich Eidam , who from 1878 to 1934 brought together an extensive collection of prehistoric and early historical objects. From 1906 the collection was exhibited in a town house. In 1921 she moved to the newly created local history museum in the former Schranne and in 1938 to the so-called Palais Heydenab or Feldmeier House . After the museum was redesigned in 1984, the collection was stored in the warehouse until 1998, as it could not be adequately displayed for reasons of space. In 1984 the museum was transferred to the Tourist Association. A donation from the Gunzenhausen Lions Club enabled the opening of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History, designed by Werner Mühlhäußer and Johann Schrenk , in the Faulstich House at the Blasturm in 1998 .

construction

The exhibition rooms are spread over four floors, which, similar to an archaeological sequence of layers, contain the oldest finds below and the most recent ones above. Accordingly, in addition to the history of the museum itself, the Upper Palaeolithic and the Neolithic are presented on the ground floor. On the first floor there are artefacts from the period between the Bronze Age and the establishment of the Limes , on the second floor there are Roman and early medieval finds. Finally, in the attic there is the city wall with a battlement with a transition to the blow tower.
