The Museum of Ancient Shipbuilding in Mainz in 1994 in the former wholesale market (before railway repair shop of the Hessian Ludwig Railway ) at South Station as a branch of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum opened after 1981/82 during construction work near the Rhine, the well-preserved remains of several ships from late Roman times , the so called Mainz Roman ships were found. There were two different types of warship in the late Roman Rhine fleet and other types of ships .

The exhibits include the remains of five Roman warships from the 4th century, replicas in original size, the fragment of a barge, many ship reliefs and stone monuments, as well as models and display boards that also provide information on ancient shipbuilding in general, structural engineering and the Roman naval system in the Germanic provinces and informed throughout the empire.

A workshop is attached to the museum, where visitors have the opportunity to watch the employees make antique ship models.

In mid-April 2010 the museum was closed due to extensive renovation and renovation work. After a long delay, it was opened on December 13, 2011. In addition to a restructuring of the exhibition space, the didactic side of the exhibition was changed. In addition to reducing costs, the energetic changes also served to better preserve the original finds.

Visiting the permanent exhibition is free.
