Music geragogy is a specialist discipline at the intersection of music education and geragogy , which deals with musical education in old age as well as with music-related mediation and acquisition processes.

Working with old and very old people requires a different didactic and methodical approach than in music education for young people, and this has an impact on research, training and practice. For music with old people and making music in old age, the consideration of personal life experiences (biographical, intergenerational and culturally sensitive orientation), learning in the event of mental and physical impairments, and validation are of particular importance. Important findings come from related disciplines such as geriatric psychology, nursing science , social work , gerontology , music therapy and curative education . Music geragogues work in different institutions (e.g. music schools , senior academies , old people's homes and nursing homes ).

In 2009, the German Society for Music Geragogy (DGfMG) was founded in Münster , whose goals are aimed at promoting education and training in the field of music geragogy as well as the professional development of music geragogy in health, social and educational systems.
