Robert Eisenman

Robert H. Eisenman (* 1937 ) is an American archaeologist . He is Professor of Middle Eastern Religion and Archeology and Director of the Institute for the Study of Early Judeo - Christian and Islamic History at California State University, Long Beach . He is also a visiting senior member of Linacre College at the University of Oxford and is considered a Qumran specialist.

education

Eisenman graduated from Cornell University and earned a BA in philosophy and engineering physics in 1958. He earned an MA degree from New York University in 1966 , this time focusing on Middle Eastern studies. He then received his doctorate in 1971 from Columbia University on Middle Eastern languages ​​and culture.

Act

He was instrumental in making the Dead Sea Scrolls publicly available and was one of the leading figures among the group of proponents of an opening between 1987 and 1992. Among other things, he was co-editor of a facsimile edition (1989) and also translated the texts. He also advised the Huntington's Disease Library in California , where he was instrumental in the decision to open the archives.

Eisenman was a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities at the Albright Institute for Archaeological Research in Jerusalem and was a Senior Fellow at the Oxford Center for Postgraduate Hebrew Studies.
