Muslimgauze , real name Bryn Jones , (born June 17, 1961 in Manchester ; † January 14, 1999 ibid) was a British musician from the field of electronic music , who dedicated his work to support the "Arab cause" in the Middle East.

Life

He spoke out for Hamas and the PLO and took the view that Israel / Palestine was occupied by the Zionists. He has never even visited the Middle East because he thought it wrong to enter an occupied country as a tourist. The name Muslimgauze is supposed to be a play on words, composed of Muslim and English. "Muslin" for muslin and "gauze" for gauze . Despite the name of his music project, Jones insisted that he was not interested in religion.

He was an outspoken opponent of the use of computers and samplers in music and always recorded his material with purely analog equipment. Jones recorded himself playing various musical instruments commonly used in the Middle East, primarily percussion , and recorded voices and noises from the region from old tapes or from radio broadcasts, which were often repeated rhythmically. All of his recordings were primarily live and were edited and mixed afterwards. The result of this process often sounded loud and static, with sudden changes in volume.

Muslimgauze has produced a plethora of albums. Each one of them was named after or inspired by a political fact or event. His albums were usually released in editions of 200 to 1000. Due to the interest in his work there are repeated reprints or new compilations are published.

He began producing music in 1982, initially under the name Eg Oblique Graph., At that time to protest against the occupation of Lebanon by Israel . Under this name he released three cassettes: Extended Play (1982), Piano Room (1982) and Inhalt (1983) as well as a 4-track 7 " EP with triptych (1982) , which is a curiosity with the piece Studies of the red pope when a female person read the text of a holiday letter she was writing in German, while electronic sounds can be heard in the background. Thomas Elbern played the piece on July 28, 1987 on his WDR 1 radio show Graffiti under the comment “Holiday greetings of a very special kind ”.

In 1983 Bryn Jones changed his name to Muslimgauze and released an EP (Hammer & Sickle), his first LP (Kabul) and another cassette (Opaques), all in 1983. In 1990 he was accepted by the Extreme label Dutch label Staalplaat and the US Soleilmoon. He had not received any money for seven albums by then, so he got into financial difficulties.

In 1995 he produced six albums, fifteen in 1996, nine in 1997 and sixteen in 1998. After his death, the various labels he had worked with released unreleased material and re-released albums that were out of print, with 22 new or re-released albums in 1999.

On Wednesday December 30, 1998, Bryn Jones was admitted to a Manchester hospital with an unknown condition. It turned out that he suffered from a rare fungal disease. The treatment was unsuccessful, the organ functions failed and he died on January 14, 1999.

Quotes

“You might like vodka. I like Arabic culture. "

"I am not religious. That just brings trouble. If other people believe, that's their business, it's nothing for me. "

When asked about the response to music in the Arab countries: “Zero. No. But we don't expect any. That is not important."
