Masuri ( Hindi : मसूरी , Masūrī ; English : Mussoorie ) is a small town with 30,118 inhabitants (2011 census) in the Indian state of Uttarakhand .
The city is located 278 km north of Delhi and 34 km from Dehradun , the capital of the state, at an altitude of 1921 m and stretches about 15 km over a rugged mountain ridge.
Masuri was founded as Hill Station in 1832 by British adventurer Captain Young and is now a popular destination for middle-class Indians who want to escape the heat of the plains. It offers tourists a promenade ( The Mall ), a cable car with which one can go to Gun Hill , which is close to the center , as well as numerous amusement stalls and souvenir shops. But the main attraction is the view of the forests and peaks of the central Himalayas . In and around Masuri numerous schools with boarding schools have been founded by western missionaries. The Landour Language School offers Hindi courses that primarily attract Western foreigners.
Masuri is the birthplace of the famous crime writer Patricia Wentworth (1878–1961) and the Australian pianist Geoffrey Tozer (1954–2009).
