Mykhaylo Mychajlowytsch Werbyzkyj ( Ukrainian Михайло Михайлович Вербицький ; * 4. March 1815 in Jawornik Ruski , Galicia , Empire of Austria ; † 7. December 1870 in Młyny , Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria , Austria-Hungary ) was a Ukrainian Greek Catholic priest and composer .

Mychajlo Werbyzkyj wrote the melody ? / i , initially for voice, later with orchestral accompaniment, to the poem “Ukraine has not died yet” written in autumn 1862 by Pavlo Tschubynskyj , today's national anthem of Ukraine Shche ne wmerla Ukrajina . Furthermore, he wrote choral music to texts by Taras Shevchenko , Markijan Schaschkewytsch and Jurij Fedkowytsch , sacred music for mixed and male choirs. He also composed the music for 18 theater pieces, operettas and variety shows as well as a large number of overtures and polonaises for orchestra.

Honors

On the occasion of the 200th birthday of Mychajlo Werbyzkyj in 2015, the Ukrainian Post issued a postage stamp and the Ukrainian National Bank issued a two hryvnia commemorative coin with his portrait.
