The very hungry ( Mycteria ) form a genus within the stork family (Ciconiidae), which includes four species found in America, Africa and Asia. This genus is also represented in North America with the forest stork . It is the only species from the stork family that also breeds in North America.

While the population of three of the four species of this genus is classified as safe, the milk stork found in Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam is considered endangered.

features

Glutton reach a body length between 83 and 105 centimeters and have a wingspan of up to 150 centimeters.

The mainly white plumage has black wing feathers. All species also have a black tail. While the three species of the ancient world have a yellow beak and a yellow or red featherless face, the wood stork has a bare head and neck with black scaly skin and a dark gray beak that curves slightly downwards. Insatiable flies with their necks and legs straight.

Way of life

The four species live in the tropics of America , Africa and Asia . They are resident birds that breed on trees or rocks in low-lying wetlands. The wood stork occasionally breeds in very large colonies, whereas the breeding colonies of the colored stork in small colonies and the milk stork in mixed breeding colonies near other bird species. When looking for insects , fish and frogs, they walk slowly and steadily through shallow water.

There are four recent species in this genus:

  • Forest stork ( M. americana ). Body length between 82 and 102 centimeters. Distribution area Southern North America, Central and South America to the north of Argentina.
  • Milky stork ( M. cinerea ). Body length between 95 and 100 centimeters. Distribution area Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam.
  • Gluttonous ( M. ibis ). Body length between 95 and 105 centimeters. Distribution area are large parts of Africa and Madagascar.
  • Colorful stork ( M. leucocephala ). Body length between 93 and 102 centimeters. Distribution area is India and Sri Lanka to Vietnam and southern China.
