Myelin Gene Regulatory Factor ( MRF ) is a transcription factor , which in vertebrate animals , the gene expression of myelin - proteins in the central nervous system regulated. In addition to this essential role in myelination , MRF is also important for oligodendrocyte maturation and the maintenance of a differentiated cell status.

MRF has a region of high homology to the transcription factor Ndt80 of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (more precisely: the gene segments are orthologous to one another). This finding led to the assumption that it is itself a nuclear transcription factor.

The expression of MRF is specific for differentiated, myelinating oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system . It is essential for the homeostasis of myelin . As a result of a loss of functional MRF, there is a drastic decrease in the gene expression of important myelin components, such as: B. proteolipid protein (PLP), myelin basic protein (MBP), myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG), and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG).

MRF is thus one of the key components in the activation and regulation of the transcription of myelin proteins.
