Mykola Lwowytsch Skadowskyj (born November 16, jul. / 28. November  1845 greg. In Biloserka , Kherson Gubernia , Russian Empire ; † June 11 jul. / 23. June  1892 greg. In Langeron, Odessa , Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian and Russian genre painter .

Life

Skadowskyj was born as a descendant of an old Polish noble family in Biloserka in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Kherson . He went to the Richelieu High School in Odessa and studied from 1865 at the medical faculty of Moscow University and at the same time at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture . After completing his studies, he went to the Düsseldorf Art Academy , worked as an artist in Italy and visited Paris and Vienna.

From 1876 Skadowskyj lived in Biloserka and, thanks to the estate of his mother, was able to devote himself to his creative activities and to paint in his own studio. He settled in Odessa in the late 1870s, and his house became a cultural center that attracted famous artists, musicians and writers. In March 1890 he was the initiator and co-founder of the Society for Regular Exhibitions of South Russian Artists in Odessa.

In addition to genre paintings, Skadowskyj created landscape paintings and portraits . The Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow contains some of his genre paintings such as “Gasthaus-Redner” from 1881 and “In Vladimir Prison ” from 1891. In total, he created more than 100 paintings.
