Mysterious Billy Smith (real name Billy Amos Smith ; born May 15, 1871 in Little River , Digby County , Nova Scotia , Canada or East Port , Missouri , United States ; † October 14, 1937 in Portland , Oregon , United States) was a Canadian Boxer and two-time welterweight world champion .

Career

Smith played 89 fights, of which he won 22 by knockout and lost eight by knockout.

For the first time he became world champion on December 14, 1892 by defeating Danny Needham at the Wigwam Theater in San Francisco after 14 rounds by knockout. In 1894 he lost the title to Tommy Ryan . The fight in Minneapolis, Minnesota was canceled after 20 rounds and Ryan, who had been leading by points until then, was declared world champion.

On August 25, 1898, he won the title after a fight in New York over 25 rounds against Matty Matthews . On January 15, 1900, he lost the title in a fight in Buffalo, New York against Rube Ferns .
