The Northern Trefoil ( Gillenia trifoliata ) is a species of the genus Gillenia in the rose family .
features
The northern three-leaf spar is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 50 to 100 centimeters. The upper and lower stem leaves are similar. There are no glands on the underside of the leaves. The 5 to 10 millimeter long stipules are obsolete, small, subleaf, linear to lanceolate, entire, ciliated or covered with individual teeth. The petals are 12 to 2 millimeters long and mostly pink.
The flowering period extends from June to August.
Systematics and distribution
The northern trefoil occurs in Canada in Ontario and in the USA in the northeast, east and southeast. The species grows in dry to moist mountain forests . It was first described in 1753 as Spiraea trifoliata by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum . In 1802 Conrad Moench placed the species in the genus Gillenia that he newly established .
