action

An American bomber was shot down over the coast of Norway during World War II . The nine crew members parachute and land near a village. While German troops are looking for them, Norwegian resistance fighters from Unit 05 (Vestfold) also swarm out to help them. With the knowledge of the sexton and pastor, they bring the American soldiers to the local church. There they are temporarily hidden in the attic until an escape transport to neutral Sweden can be organized for them.

Meanwhile the resistance group received the news that an organist named Alf Sonerud (nicknamed "Straw Man") is to be liquidated. It is an informant for the German occupation forces who hangs around church communities. The "straw man", whose nickname comes from his habit of incessantly chewing on a straw, now appears in the vicinity of the church that gives refuge to the refugees.

Hans, the protagonist of the resistance fighters, is supposed to marry the organist Kirstin, who also belongs to the group, in the near future. Their wedding is announced during a mass, while at the same time the broken foot of a rescued soldier is being tended to in the attic. The search for the other crash-landed bomber pilots turns out to be difficult, one of the pilots is dead, another seriously injured and in the hands of the Germans. Nevertheless, the remaining five bomber pilots manage to get into the church.

In the meantime, the straw man makes the acquaintance of the organist Kirstin, with whom he pretends to be fleeing the Germans himself. At first, she is unaware of the news accusing him of being a collaborator and of the death sentence that was imposed on him. However, when he shows up at the church, Kristin is informed of this by her husband Hans. She is supposed to lure the straw man into the forest, where he is to be executed. However, the straw man becomes suspicious and is overwhelmed and ultimately killed in the church.

The dead straw man is secretly exchanged on a ferry for the soldier in German captivity, the rest of the soldiers are brought to the port with a ruse on a German truck. There everyone is free. Since Hans is recognized, he and his wife have to flee to Sweden.

criticism

Nødlanding is one of the films with which Arne Skouen addresses the time of the German occupation in Norway and the Norwegian resistance. His films Nødlanding (1952), As far as the forces can (1957), Omringet (1960) and Kalde spor (1962) are among the most popular films of the post-war period in Norway. Skouen is less concerned with heroes than with average people who put themselves at the service of the cause and often threaten to fail when faced with the challenge. His films often have a semi-documentary character. In the opening credits of the film, reference is made to a military unit No. 5 (Vestfold), which would have been involved in the production of the film with advice and support.
