NBC Funkhaus Namibia , also Funkhaus FM , (until March 2017 NBC German Radio Program ) is a radio program of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation in German. The program went on air on October 1, 1979. The transmitter is located at the nbc Radio Center on Pettenkoferstraße in Windhoek-West . Michaela Jaeger was the program director from 2003 to 2015 and has been Lucia Engombe since then.

Surname

In contrast to radio programs in Germany, there is no clear regulation on the use of the correct station name. On the part of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation, the English program is simply referred to as German Service , analogous to the other language services . Derived from this, the slang term Deutscher Dienst is used in Namibian audiences . Deutscher Hörfunk and Deutscher Sender are just as widespread , names that can be traced back to a time when there was only one German-language radio program in Namibia . The broadcaster itself uses the designation German radio program of nbc as long form, German radio program as short form and occasionally also nbc German in the current program . There is currently a discussion about renaming the station, which will also involve an active dialogue with the listeners. The renaming also affects other Namibian Broadcasting Corporation radio programs, including nbc National Radio .

program

The station broadcasts a full 24-hour program, with only music being played between 11 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The music, also in the night program, is editorially selected.

Music color

The musical color of the nbc's German radio program is very heterogeneous. According to the program mandate, the tastes of the entire German-speaking minority in Namibia must be taken into account. For this reason, in addition to current international and German-language pop music, alternative pop music and hits, classical music and jazz are also broadcast. There is also room for music for specific interest groups such as metal and hard rock in the program.

Listener initiative

An important basis for securing the preservation and diversity of the German radio program is the listener initiative founded in 1993 to support the German-language radio program of the nbc . The listeners' initiative is financed by membership fees and donations, which are then made available to the German radio program as a means. In addition to the running costs that the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation cannot bear, this also ensures the ongoing development of the program or the accommodation of interns from Germany.
