The series 602 and 603 are combustion railcars of the National Society of Belgian Railways, which were built from 1954 to 1955 by Ateliers Metallurgiques de Nivelles . They were initially given the series designations of the class 602 and class 603 diesel multiple units built in the 1930s and destroyed in World War II . From 1971 onwards they were referred to as series 42 and series 43.
history
Order and delivery
After the Second World War there was a great shortage of diesel railcars in Belgium, as many vehicles had been destroyed by fighting during the war. After the first series of 554 series rail buses equipped with Brossel engines were put into service in 1952 , the National Society of the Belgian Railways aimed to place a larger order for diesel multiple units . As part of this order, 10 each series 604 and 605 multiple units were ordered from Atelier Germain , mainly for traffic between Dinant and Virton . At the same time, 30 class 603 railcars and 6 class 602 railcars were ordered from Ateliers Metallurgiques de Nivelles. The 6 vehicles of the 602 series were optimized for feeder traffic to Brussels Airport and differed from the 603 series railcars in that they had additional first-class seats and a baggage compartment.

In September 1957, a class 602 railcar was converted into a class 603. However, as early as the next year, 6 vehicles from the 603 series were converted to the 602 series, as additional trains were inserted to the airport for the large number of external visitors to the Expo 58 in Brussels. After the end of the Expo, only five of the previously converted units were dismantled, so that the number of existing vehicles from the 602 series was again 6. In 1971 the vehicles of the 602 series were redesignated as the 42 series and the 603 series as the 43 series. A year later, the use of the 42 series in feeder traffic for Brussels Airport ended, and all units were converted to the 43 series. Thus there were 36 vehicles of the series 43 at this time; the converted railcars were given the numbers 4331 to 4336.
Modernization and retirement
The railcars were overhauled in the 1980s. In the meantime, all trains have been withdrawn from regular service; two vehicles - the railcars 4302 and 4333 - have been preserved in a museum.
technology
All vehicles are equipped with a single 6-cylinder diesel engine from the manufacturer Carels. This drives the internal wheelset of one of the two bogies via a hydraulic transmission . The other set of wheels on this bogie is not powered. The second bogie is a pure running bogie; the center distance within this bogie is smaller.
