Nachschon is a person from the tribe of Judah mentioned several times in the Bible . He was the son of Amminadab and the father of Salmon and thus belongs to the family tree of Jesus and King David . His sister Elisheba was Aaron's wife .

etymology

The Hebrew personal name נַחְשֹׁון naḥšôn , German 'Nachschon' is probably a one-word and animal name. It is derived from the noun נָחָשׁ nāḥāš and like this means "snake". Alternatively, a connection to the root נחשׁ nḥš “fortune telling” could be assumed. Comparable is the name Nahasch (נָחָשׁ nāḥāš "snake (?)"), Also the Akkadian name Nuḫšānu and the old South Arabic name NḤSN .

The Septuagint gives the name as Ναασσων Naassōn , the Vulgate as Naasson , the Samaritan Pentateuch as Nēššon .

Mention in the Bible

According to 4. Book of Moses  1, 7  LUT , Nakhon was one of the twelve representatives of the tribes that Moses was supposed to help with the counting of the people of Israel after they left Egypt . In the 2nd chapter of the same book the order of the camps of the tribes around the tabernacle or on the journey to the promised land is described. First of all, the tribe of Judah is mentioned under the leadership of Nachshon (Numbers 2,3 LUT ). Again in a similar way it is mentioned in Numbers 10, 14  LUT . In the 7th chapter the consecration of Nachshon, which he was the first of the tribal princes to offer on the occasion of the dedication of the tabernacle, is described:

“On the first day his gift brought Nachshon the son of Amminadab of the tribe of Judah. And his gift was a silver bowl weighing a hundred and thirty shekels, a silver bowl weighing seventy shekels according to the coin weight of the sanctuary, both full of fine flour, mixed with oil, for a meal offering, plus a golden spoon weighing ten shekels, full of incense young bull, one ram, one year old lamb for a burnt offering, one billy goat for a sin offering and two cattle, five rams, five goats and five year old lambs for a sacrifice of peace. That is the gift of Nahshon, son of Amminadab. "

- Numbers 7: 12-17 LUT

As the direct ancestor of King David, Nakhon is mentioned in Ruth  4.20 LUT and 1. Chronicles  2.10-11 LUT . As in Numbers 1, he is referred to in Book 1 of the Chronicles as the prince or leader of the tribe of Judah.

In the New Testament , David's family tree, including his descendants up to Joseph , Mary's husband , is given in two places. In Matthew  1, 7  LUT and Luke  3, 32  LUT , Nachon is mentioned in these lists.
