Forwarding order

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A forwarding order (also called forwarding service, earlier request for forwarding) is an order from a mail recipient to a postal company to forward his mail to a new address in the event of a change of address. Other reasons can include temporary absence, death, insolvency and need for care. Forwarding orders are subject to a fee in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and are limited in time.

Historical development

Before 2003, the forwarding of mail was free of charge if you changed your place of residence or whereabouts and applied for forwarding. The sender was able to prohibit forwarding by issuing an advance directive. Forwarded were z. B. ordinary and registered letters, postal and payment orders, postal delivery orders, but also advertising mail. Postage was recalculated for parcels and valuables sent on. There were special regulations when moving abroad. Since 1993, requests for forwarding have lost their validity after a certain period.

Since 2019, private customers at Deutsche Post AG have been paying € 26.90 for twelve months (online) or € 29.90 (branch price) and business customers € 49.90 for twelve months. Having Swiss Post forwarded for 24 months costs € 34.90 for private customers and € 69.90 for business customers. The order requires five working days in advance. Until July 2019, it was possible to have the post forwarded for six months.

The yellow forwarding label shows the day and month on which the label was affixed. It is July 4th on the sticker shown. However, even when asked, Deutsche Post did not provide proof of this information.

Deutsche Post AG receives around 4 million relocation addresses from private individuals every year. Based on the price list, this is an annual sales volume of at least EUR 60 million.

Deutsche Post's competitors such as PIN AG also offer forwarding orders - some free of charge, but limited to the corresponding delivery areas. The directory of German forwarding orders currently lists 35 deliverers with their own forwarding orders and the associated delivery areas. Deutsche Post AG provides relocation information to competing companies upon request, if this was not ruled out when applying for the forwarding order. It is not possible to set up the forwarding order directly with other deliverers via Deutsche Post AG. This service is offered for a fee, however, by private service providers who, depending on the address area of a recipient, apply for the order from the deliverers operating in the address area. This practice is controversial. Consumer advocates and the Post AG officially warn against third-party offers. Such offers can be found on prominent advertising spaces on Google. nachsenden.info offers private individuals a forwarding post for 6 months for 76.96 euros.

Forwarding can be excluded by the sender by means of a corresponding "advance directive".

Newspapers and magazines are not forwarded, only wrapper newspapers (newspapers, magazines in addressed, postage-paid covers, with the exception of postal items). In addition, Dialogpost without wrapping (e.g. catalogs or brochures), express mail and press mailings are excluded for redirected domestic mail. Forwarding of Dialogpost, merchandise, advertising replies, press mail, letters with the additional services cash on delivery and value, Postident as well as parcels, parcels and express mail abroad is excluded. The foreign postal company may, under certain circumstances, collect additional charges.

Forwarding orders and address updates

At Deutsche Post AG, forwarding orders, which are subject to a charge, form the basis of the business model of Deutsche Post Adress , if not contradicted . The company is a joint venture between Deutsche Post and Bertelsmann . It updates customer databases of interested companies by notifying companies of customer addresses in an updated form.

Situation in Austria

The forwarding order from Österreichische Post AG is chargeable and limited in time to a maximum of one year. It can be expanded to include up to four family members or housemates who live at the same address. A distinction is made between private and business forwarding orders and the type of forwarding order: relocation , temporary or vacation .

In 2011, the forms for forwarding orders contain a clause with which the client gives consent that his personal data may be passed on to address publishers and direct marketing companies. In the Austrian address broker sector, Swiss Post is one of the largest providers on the market.

Situation in Switzerland

Private customers pay CHF 42 at the counter or over the phone to change their address in Switzerland or CHF 30 online. Forwarding items abroad cost 102 francs at the counter or over the phone or 90 francs online.

The temporarily valid forwarding in the event of absence from vacation costs 22 francs at the counter or over the phone or 10 francs online. Each additional week costs an additional four francs.
